Maternity care and arrangements

maternity care

It is important to arrange maternity care at the beginning of your pregnancy, preferably before 16 weeks. A maternity nurse assists us during the delivery and helps you take care of yourself and the baby during the first week. It also carries out checks and keeps us informed. The maternity nurse is indispensable for us and for you during the maternity period, so make sure you have this properly arranged.

The number of hours of maternity care is determined in accordance with the National Indication Protocol (LIP). The LIP offers us the opportunity (if necessary) to provide extra hours of maternity care. The maternity care is (partially) reimbursed by the insurance of the pregnant woman, not by your partner's insurance. Depending on your insurance, you pay a personal contribution (per hour) for maternity care.

Below are a number of maternity agencies that we often work with (click on the link to go to the website):

Recognition/naming

A name for your child is something you sometimes have to think about for a long time. But not only the first name of your child is important. It is wise to think about the last name of your child during pregnancy. Are you also legally the parents of your child? How does one thing work?

If you are married or registered partners:

  • You are both legally the parents. The recognition is therefore arranged.
  • By default, the baby is given the father's last name.
  • if you want to give the baby the surname of the mother, you must arrange this together with the civil affairs department of the municipality before the delivery.

If you are not married or not registered partners:

  • By default, the baby is given the mother's last name
  • if you want to give the baby the father's last name, he must first recognize the baby. By recognizing the baby, the father gets the same rights and obligations as if you were married or registered partners. It is wise to have the acknowledgment deed drawn up before the birth. Preferably before 24 weeks of pregnancy. The mother must give official permission to the father to acknowledge the baby. For this you have to go to the civil affairs department of the municipality. You must make an appointment in advance for this. Don't forget to bring your ID with you. Officially this is called the recognition of the unborn fetus.

Once you have chosen a surname, all subsequent children must have the same surname. You can therefore not choose to give your first child the surname of the mother and your second child the surname of the father.

Maternity leave

As a working pregnant woman you are entitled to 16 weeks of maternity leave. The maternity leave may start 4-6 weeks before the due date. If you give birth later than the due date, these weeks will not be deducted from your maternity leave. You are always entitled to a minimum of 10 weeks leave after giving birth.

To apply for maternity leave, your employer will ask for a pregnancy statement. You can get this from us if your due date is known. For more information, visit the website of the UWV

maternity package

A maternity package contains important items for during and after your birth. Everyone who is going to give birth should have a maternity package at home. So it makes no difference whether you give birth at home or in the hospital. This package is usually provided by your health insurer. Sometimes it is necessary to request this package from your health insurer. If your insurance company does not reimburse the maternity package, you can go to a drugstore, pharmacy or some baby shops.
